OSHA & Bloodborne Pathogens for Midwives
This OSHA and BBP course is designed specifically for midwives who work in out-of-hospital settings. Midwives who work in birth centers are required to take an OSHA and BBP course annually. This course provides 1 CEU hour upon completion.
Cultural Awareness For Midwives
This course provides midwives and student midwives a general education about providing care to clients from cultural backgrounds that differ from your own. This course has 6 parts, and is expected to take 2 hours to complete. Once you have reviewed the course material, complete the assignment and quiz to receive your certificate of completion.
HIPAA Midwives
This course on HIPAA is specifically created for midwives who practice in out-of-hospital settings. Once you complete the course and take the quiz, you will receive a certificate of completion and 1 CEU which is good for two years.

Texas Midwifery Basic information and Instructors Manual
Pre-License Continuing Education Course
Prior to applying for your initial Texas license, you must provide proof of completing a continuing education course on the current Texas Midwifery Basic Information and Instructors Manual (PDF).
*For group practices who may be purchasing modules on behalf of their staff, we recommend that each staff member complete their own purchase and form, and submit receipts for reimbursement to the employer. Currently there is no feature that allows for bulk purchases/enrollments. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Texas LM Renewal Requirements
According to the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation, when renewing a license, State-licensed midwives are required to:
complete 20 contact hours (5 for a retired midwife license) of approved midwifery education every two years (within each license cycle)
Course content must include new developments in the field of midwifery or knowledge in the field of midwifery.
Courses must be provided by an accredited body, including:
Professional associations for midwifery, nursing, social work or medicine
Colleges, universities or approved courses in basic midwifery education
Nursing, medical or healthcare organizations
State Board of Nursing or Medicine
Department of Health
Hospitals
At least 2 of the contact hours must cover the topic of assessing fetal heart rates by intermittent auscultation.
hold CPR certification for health care providers from one of the following:
the American Heart Association
equivalent certification for the professional rescuer from the Red Cross
equivalent certification for healthcare and professional rescuer from the National Safety Council
equivalent certification issued by any provider of CPR certification for health care providers currently accepted by the Department of State Health Services' Office of EMS/Trauma Systems Coordination
hold current certification in neonatal resuscitation (NRP) from one of the following:
the American Academy of Pediatrics
equivalent certification approved by the department
have completed the Jurisprudence Exam within the 4 years preceding renewal (for the Texas Midwifery Basic Information and Instructor Manual and to take the exam, go here)
have completed an HHS-Approved Human Trafficking Courses for Health Care Practitioners (a list can be found here)

Continuing Education for Midwives (by Laurie Fremgen)
Laurie currently offers an excellent class on intermittent auscultation, complete with several practice sessions, where you can count, graph and interpret various fetal heartrate patterns, including establishing baseline, early and late decelerations, and a sinusoidal pattern. Members of ATM can find a discount code for this class in their membership portal. Laurie hopes to add more classes soon.
Cultural Competency & Respectful Maternity Care with MIA
"This course meets the new requirement of NARM for all CPMs and CPM applicants to take a course on Cultural Competency. The course will focus on reducing child mortality and reducing maternal mortality through the culturally sensitive and respectful care of women during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the entire childbearing season."

Evidence Based Birth CEU Classes
Evidence Based Birth classes are pre-recorded, online courses so that you can watch the videos at your own pace. Approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing, you’ll be eligible for nursing contact hours. Classes available on topics such as Gestational Diabetes, Failure to Progress, GBS, Newborn Procedures and more!

March of Dimes offers a range of educational opportunities for health professionals. Some of these opportunities include continuing education credits. Website resources, nursing modules and more.
Midwife CE currently contains online courses on suturing, hypertension in pregnancy, and integrative gynecology.
Midwifery Education Accreditation Council
MEAC approves Continuing Education Programs attended by professional midwives to maintain and upgrade their skills and knowledge for practice. One of MEAC’s roles is to evaluate and approve continuing education (CE) for midwives and other women’s health care providers.
The workshops and conferences listed have been approved for MEAC CEUs and are either offered in-person or online as indicated.
Augustine Colebrook and her team have a very well-polished set of courses, including both online and in-person offerings.
rn.com has several online classes covering topics including shoulder dystocia, gestational diabetes, cardiac conditions in labor, and breastfeeding. These can be purchased individually, or a one-year membership (currently $48) gives access to all content.
Texas Health Steps provides a number of free online classes, several of which are eligible for CEUs, including breastfeeding, CCHD, FAS, safe infant sleep, neonatal hearing screening, and newborn screens.
CEUs Approved for the NARM Bridge Certificate
Midwifery Bridge Certificate
NARM, in collaboration with the US Department of Education (USDE) accredited education programs and US MERA professional organizations will administer and award the Midwifery Bridge Certificate to CPMs based on completion of 50 accredited approved continuing education contact hours (CEUs/CMEs/CNEs) within the five-year period prior to application. Required continuing education will be based upon identified areas to address emergency skills and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) competencies. The list of approved continuing education in the following three categories will be maintained by NARM and regularly evaluated and updated.
