Dedicated to providing a quality educational program that prepares midwives to provide safe, competent and high-quality care.

Texas Midwifery School

We believe that midwives should be trained by other midwives, whether the training is in a school or through apprenticeship. Our school has been educating midwives for over 35 years. We are dedicated to providing a quality education program that prepares the midwife to provide safe, competent, and high-quality care. Our school is specifically designed to help students integrate academic learning with the clinical training received with an experienced midwife-preceptor.

The ATM Midwifery Training Program (ATMMTP) has been a state-licensed midwifery education program since 1999, with current approval through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR.)  ATMMTP graduates are eligible to take the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) exam as a Texas agency candidate, and upon successful completion, to obtain the Texas midwifery license. The graduate will also qualify for the NARM Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential.

The ATMMTP has graduated over 200 students and has a NARM pass rate of 98% with first test attempts and 100% with 2nd attempts during the past nine years.

Who can benefit?

  • Students desiring to meet Texas state-mandated minimum education requirements for a Licensed Midwife

  • Students or midwives who wish to obtain the CPM credential

  • Practicing midwives wishing to review their knowledge or supplement the knowledge gained through independent study

Program Overview

The ATMMTP is an nine-part comprehensive midwifery education program utilizing direct assessment of student learning. The curriculum is based on the Midwives Alliance of North America standards for practice and the most current "Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice."  All  NARM educational and clinical requirements are met during the program. Requirements are met through a variety of methods, including flexible but structured home and internet-based coursework, required reading, research, and community projects. Each of the 9 parts, or modules, ends with mandatory workshops where review, application, integration, and examination occur. The program's expected completion period is approximately 36 months, including the required clinical component.

The academic portion of the ATMMTP is divided into nine (9) Online Modules with related in-person workshops. Each modules is offered 3 times a year in a trimester structor. The trimesters begin in January, April, and August. The workshops happen at the end of each module and are generally located near where the instructors live. The trimesters end with the module workshops in April, July, and November. At the time of writing, these are the locations of workshops, though these are subject to change.

 Clinical Training

Students must complete a minimum of 24 months and 1350 contact hours of clinical training with one or more approved ATMMTP preceptors. While under the supervision of the preceptor(s), students will learn and demonstrate mastery of a minimum set of skills and document completion of all ATMMTP clinical requirements. During the clinical training period, the student will begin to develop her intuitive skills and sense of touch, as important to midwifery care as the knowledge, risk assessment and problem identification skills learned through the academic portions of the program.

The ATMMTP recommends that students begin the clinical portion of their training following completion of the second module. It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements with an approved midwife preceptor who will work with them to complete their clinical training. The ATMMTP will provide the student with a list of approved preceptors after enrollment. Midwives who are not already approved by the ATMMTP may seek approval by requesting an application from the ATMMTP Director.  A Midwife who is a NARM registered preceptor is eligible to be an ATMMTP preceptor but will still need to complete a preceptor agreement form. She should contact the school for complete information.

The ATMMTP realizes that completion of clinical training is dependent on the goodwill of families and midwives in allowing students to participate in their birth experiences. The dignity and wishes of midwifery clients are of utmost importance. Therefore, program extensions will be granted when circumstances warrant.

Out-of-State Students

Important information for out-of-state students

Option 1

Complete the program as prescribed for Texas students, including attending all the workshops and apprenticing with an approved CPM or CNM. By using this option, you will be able to sit the NARM exam as a Texas Agency candidate (you can test at a site other than Texas if more convenient). You will then be able to license in Texas and use your Texas License to apply for NARM certification (CPM). Texas midwifery educational requirements have been evaluated for educational equivalency by NARM.

Option 2

This option is for use as an independent study guide only and will not qualify you for the Texas license or NARM Certification.

If you choose not to license in Texas and apply for NARM Certified Professional Midwife status as a Texas Agency candidate, you may omit: attending the workshops and the apprenticeship period. After submitting the assignments from the first module of study and passing the exam you will receive the next module of study. Course installment payments must be made prior to receiving each successive module of study. When you have completed all seven modules of study and passed the related exams, you will be given a letter verifying your completion of academics only. Module 8,  Advanced Skills, requires attendance at the two day workshop.  ( If you should choose to change over to the program as prescribed by Texas law, you will be required to attend any missed workshops and complete an apprenticeship period with an approved Preceptor.)

Out-of-state applicants are welcome!
However, if you live out-of-state we encourage you to contact the
ATMMTP Director prior to enrolling to discuss your options.
