The overall goals of the QA/QI Committee are evolving and flexible, with a shared vision of promoting accountability, collaboration, and continual improvement in midwifery care across the state.
The Association of Texas Midwives is proud to announce the formation of the Quality Assurance & Quality Improvement (QA/QI) Committee, a volunteer-based initiative dedicated to strengthening safety, transparency, and professional growth within Texas midwifery.
The overall goals of the QA/QI Committee are evolving and flexible, with a shared vision of promoting accountability, collaboration, and continual improvement in midwifery care across the state.
Current Goals & Initiatives
Establishing a structured, statewide peer review system accessible to all midwives, supporting midwives through reflective case review, mentorship, and professional development
Developing a consumer feedback pathway to offer mediation and resolution options outside the regulatory process
Collecting de-identified outcome data to identify trends and improve care
Collaborating with the ATM Legislative Committee to help inform and support policy and legislation that advances safe, evidence-based midwifery care in Texas
Creating a TDLR Liaison team to strengthen communication and understanding between midwives and regulators
Fostering a culture of respect, safety, and unity among Texas midwives
Requirements to Join
Must be an active or retired Licensed Midwife (LM)
Must be an ATM-registered preceptor or meet the qualifications
Must agree to follow ATM Bylaws and Policies as well as the QA/QI Committee's policies, confidentiality, and structure
Participation is open to all who meet these requirements—no interview process required. However, all members must uphold the principles of confidentiality, respect, and professionalism; failure to do so may result in removal from the committee.

A: The committee will meet monthly in the beginning while getting established, typically for 1-2 hours via Zoom. If you participate in peer reviews or join a subcommittee, you may have additional meetings or case reviews, but you can choose your level of involvement based on your availability. Many activities can be done on your own schedule.

A: No! Training and mentorship will be provided. This committee is designed to support midwives at all experience levels. If you've ever reflected on your own practice, participated in a peer review or talked through a challenging case with a colleague, you already have the foundation for peer review.

A: The QA/QI Committee is designed to function outside the regulatory process. This is about professional development, mentorship, and voluntary improvement—not enforcement. Peer review participation requires adherence to ATM bylaws and confidentiality agreements. Non-compliance to these policies and guidelines will be grounds for dismissal.

A: Yes! We need diverse perspectives. Newer midwives bring fresh eyes and current training; experienced midwives bring wisdom and historical context. Both are invaluable.

A: You'll gain access to mentorship, expand your professional network, contribute to shaping the future of midwifery in Texas, and strengthen your own clinical reasoning through case discussion and data review. Plus, you'll be part of building something meaningful for our profession.

A: At minimum, attendance at regular committee meetings and adherence to confidentiality and professionalism standards. Beyond that, you can choose how deeply you want to engage—whether that's participating in peer reviews, joining a subcommittee, or contributing to data collection efforts.
